In order for you to be able to work temporarily in Germany as a veterinarian without a license to practice medicine, you need a permit.

If you have completed training as a veterinarian, but do not have a license to practice medicine, and only want to practice the veterinary profession temporarily, you need a permit.

The permit entitles you to use the professional title "veterinarian".

The permit may be limited to certain activities and employment positions.

It may only be granted or extended revocably and only up to a total duration of veterinary activity of no more than 4 years.

The following documents must be submitted:

  • application for authorisation to practise the veterinary profession on a temporary basis;
  • proof of nationality (certified copy of identity card, passport or proof of identity),
  • proof of professional qualification (veterinary diploma, certificate or other veterinary evidence of formal qualifications),
  • if applicable, certified proof of recognition of asylum, permission under the Residence Act or possession of a naturalisation guarantee
  • signed curriculum vitae in tabular form: up-to-date, concise and with a detailed, time-loop presentation of the training path and professional career
  • Certificate from the future employer about the possibility of employment and justification (e.g. employment contract, needs test)
  • Proof of impunity, certificate of good conduct for the submission of an authority (This proof may not be more than 3 months old when the application is submitted.)
  • Medical health certificate, according to which you are suitable for practicing the veterinary profession from a health point of view (no official medical certificate required, this proof may not be more than 3 months old when applying).)

The documents may be addressed to the competent authority without any specific formal requirements.

Note: Foreign language documents must be enclosed in German translation. The translation must be carried out by an officially sworn in document interpreter. Diplomas, certificates of veterinary training must be submitted in a certified translation.


In order to obtain a permit for the temporary exercise of the veterinary profession,

  • you must provide proof of completed training for the veterinary profession
  • you must not be guilty of conduct resulting in unworthiness or unreliability for the exercise of the veterinary profession
  • you must not be unsuitable for the practice of veterinary profession from a health point of view
  • you must have the necessary German language skills for the job at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and
  • you need proof of a specific job.
