Amputations in vertebrates: shortening the tip of the beak, shortening the end piece of the tail of calves under three months old

The performance of essential amputations requires permission.

Unauthorized amputations are:

  • the shortening of the tip of the beak of laying hens in chicks under ten days old,
  • the shortening of the tips of beaks in other poultry species,
  • the shortening of the end piece of the tail of calves under three months old by means of elastic rings.

However, if their implementation is essential, they require permission.


  • The persons carrying out the data possess the necessary knowledge and skills.
  • It is credibly demonstrated that the interference is essential for the intended use of the animal for its protection or for the protection of other animals.

The permit is granted for a limited period of time and contains provisions on the nature, scope and time of the intervention and the person performing it.
