Animal testing: Permission

If you want to carry out tests on vertebrates, you need a permit.

Anyone wishing to carry out tests on vertebrate animals requires the approval of the test project by the competent authority.

Conditions for granting a permit:

  • The attempt is essential.
  • The responsible manager of the experimental project and his deputy have the necessary professional qualifications.
  • The necessary facilities, equipment and other material means are available.
  • The personnel and organizational requirements are met.
  • Accommodation, care, care of the animals and medical care in accordance with the legal requirements is ensured.

The application must contain all information in accordance with § 8 (2) of the Animal Welfare Act.


Animal experiments that are required by law or provided for or ordered by the authorities are not subject to approval. These must be notified to the competent authority at least two weeks before the start.

Anyone wishing to carry out animal experiments must appoint an animal welfare officer and report this to the competent authority.
