Anyone wishing to be admitted to the Bar Association as a Eurpoean lawyer must apply to the Bar Association.

Anyone who has been admitted as a European lawyer to the bar association responsible for the place of their establishment on application is entitled to practise the activity of a lawyer in Germany under the professional title of the country of origin (established European lawyer).

Admission to the Bar Association requires that the applicant is registered as a European lawyer with the competent authority of the country of origin.

  • proof of nationality of a Member State of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or of Switzerland,
  • certificate from the competent authority in the Member State of origin stating that the European lawyer belongs to this profession (if possible not older than three months),
  • Proof of professional indemnity insurance, either through insurance taken out in Germany or equivalent insurance in the country of origin.

With regard to any further evidence to be submitted, please contact the competent authority indicated.

An application form can be obtained from the responsible office.

The established European lawyer shall use the professional title which he/she is entitled to use in the country of origin under the law applicable there. Anyone who is then entitled to use the professional title "lawyer" must also indicate the professional organisation to which he/she belongs in the country of origin.

The established European lawyer is entitled to use the term "member of the Bar Association" in professional life at the same time. The term "European lawyer" may not be used as a professional title or in advertising.
