Vehicle: License plate for classic cars (H)

"Historic" are vehicles that were first registered for traffic at least 30 years ago.

"Historic" are vehicles that were first registered for traffic at least 30 years ago. The day of the first admission is decisive.

These vehicles must primarily be used for the maintenance of the cultural heritage of motor vehicles. In the license plate, historic vehicles have an "H" at the last place.

Preconditions:



  • The vehicle was first registered at least 30 years ago,
  • there is an assessment by an officially recognised expert from a technical testing centre or a test engineer from an officially recognised monitoring organisation, and
  • the vehicle is largely in its original condition and well preserved.

Procedure:

  • The application must be made in person or by a representative authorised in writing. The power of attorney must at the same time include a direct debit authorization for the motor vehicle tax as well as your consent to the disclosure of the vehicle tax-relevant data to the authorized representative.
  • If an application form is required, you can obtain it in advance from the competent licensing authority or, depending on the offer of the authority, retrieve it on the Internet.
  • If you wish to have a desired license plate, the registration/reservation can be made, depending on the offer of the authority, in person, in writing or by telephone as well as as an online service via the Internet before admission.
  • Your insurance company and the main customs office will be informed by the registration authority about the allocation of the number plate.
  • Valid identity card or passport with current confirmation of registration,
    or (in the case of foreign citizens) foreign identity card and registration certificate from the residents' registration office,
  • in the case of representation with written power of attorney additionally:
    Identity card or passport with current confirmation of registration from the authorised representative.
  • For companies:
    • natural persons: business registration,
    • legal entities: business registration or trade register extract,
    • Partnership under civil law (GbR): Shareholders' agreement and power of attorney of the persons entitled to sign according to the contract.
  • Electronic insurance confirmation,
  • Direct debit authorisation for motor vehicle tax (can also be filled in directly with the registration authority),
  • if applicable, reservation confirmation for the desired license plate.
  • If the vehicle is registered additionally:
    • Registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document),
    • Registration certificate Part II (vehicle registration document).
    • the registration plates previously assigned,
    • Expert opinion § 23 StVZO (expert opinion for the classification of a vehicle as a classic car) and general inspection.
  • If the vehicle was decommissioned before 1 October 2005, additionally:
    • certificate of decommissioning,
    • Vehicle registration document,
    • Expert opinion according to § 23 StVZO (expert opinion for the classification of a vehicle as a classic car) and general inspection.
  • If no operating permit is available, additionally:
    • Registration certificate Part II (old vehicle registration document),
    • Expert opinion according to § 23 StVZO (expert opinion for the classification of a vehicle as a classic car) and main inspection,
    • Full report according to § 21 StVZO.

Hints

Vehicles with "historical license plate" ("H license plate") are subject to a flat motor vehicle tax of 46.02 euros for motorcycles and 191.73 euros for all other vehicles.
