Vehicle: Change license plate (relabel)

If the license plates of your vehicle have been damaged, no longer legible or stolen, you must replace them immediately.

If your vehicle's license plates have become damaged, illegible, or stolen, you must ensure that they are replaced with new license plates. The required test stickers are applied by the approval authority.

In the event of theft or loss of the license plates, a re-identification is necessary. In any case, report the theft to the police.

  • Registration certificate Part I (or old vehicle registration document), in the case of re-marking Registration Certificate Part II (or old vehicle registration document),
  • valid identity card or passport with current confirmation of registration,
or (in the case of foreign citizens) foreign identity card and registration certificate from the residents' registration office,
  • if the rear registration number needs to be replaced: the certificate of the valid main inspection (HU),
  • previous license plate(s).

If you instruct a third party to register the change, they require a written power of attorney from you. In addition, he/she must present your identity card (in copy) and his/her own identity card to the admission authority.

A re-identification must also take place if the issuance of a season license plate, a classic car license plate, an e-license plate or a change plate requires a change of the license plate.

In addition, a registered vehicle can also be re-marked at the vehicle owner's own request for a fee if a different combination of license plates is applied for at the competent registration authority.
