Traffic signs and facilities

Traffic signs and traffic facilities are used for traffic control. They require an official order.

Traffic signs and traffic facilities are used for traffic control. They are ordered by the authorities and must be observed by the road user. Temporary arrangements for traffic signs and traffic facilities are also possible.

However, traffic signs and facilities may only be ordered if there is an imperative requirement.

Road signs include:

  • Road signs
  • Road markings
  • Lighting displays (e.g. variable message sign systems).

Transport facilities are:

  • Barriers
  • barrier posts,
  • parking meters,
  • parking ticket machines,
  • railings, shut-off devices,
  • control devices,
  • Flashing lights and light signal systems ("traffic lights").

All traffic signs are noted in the traffic sign catalogue (VZKat).

Hints

According to § 5 b sec. 1 StVG, the costs for traffic signs and equipment are in principle to be borne by the road construction carrier. Deviating from this, in particular § 5 b Abs. 2 - 6 StVG and § 51 StVO (for example, cost bearing by the applicants for tourist signs) result in other regulations.

Further information on traffic signs and symbols can be found on the website of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt).
