Apply for an international driver's license

International driving licences are required for temporary stays in some, especially non-European countries.

For temporary stays in some, especially non-European countries, international driving licences are required. International driving licences can be applied for at the driving licence office responsible for your main residence. International driving licences are only valid for a limited period of time. When applying, the applicant must be in possession of a valid EU/EEA driving licence or a driving licence from a third country and must have reached the age of 18.

  • Official proof of place and day of birth (e.B. identity card / passport)
  • If applicable, current registration certificate
  • valid EU/EEA driving licence according to a model to be used from 01.01.1999 or valid third-country driving licence, possibly with translation
  • current photograph (size 45x35mm, portrait format, frontal image). Information and examples can be found in the photo sample board (Bundesdruckerei).
