An international driving licence is required for temporary stays in a country that is not part of the EU.

International driving licences are required for temporary stays in a country that is not part of the EU. The international driving licence is only a translation of the national EU card driving licence and is therefore only valid in conjunction with it.

The validity of international driving licences under the International Convention on Motor Vehicle Traffic of 24 April 1926 is: one year; in the case of international driving licences in accordance with the Convention on Road Traffic of 8 November 1968: three years.


  • Possession of a valid EU card driving licence or
  • Possession of a valid foreign permit to drive motor vehicles in accordance with § 29 Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV).

You must submit the application in person and present the following documents:

  • valid identity card / valid passport with current registration certificate,
  • valid EU card driving licence,
  • Current photograph: Frontal image according to international standards (biometric photograph).
