Monument protection and monument preservation serve the research and preservation of cultural monuments and monument areas. Monument protection refers to sovereign activities, monument preservation to scientific and advisory activities.

Cultural monuments are objects, groups of things or parts of things of bygone times, the research or preservation of which is in the public interest because of their special historical, scientific, artistic, urban, technical or cultural landscape-defining value.

Require the approval of the lower monument protection authority

  • the restoration, alteration and destruction of a cultural monument,
  • the transfer of a cultural monument of local historical or cultural landscape significance to another place,
  • the modification of the environment of an immovable cultural monument, if it is likely to impair its impression.

Hints

There are attractive tax reliefs for monument owners, provided that renovation or maintenance measures are agreed in advance with the upper monument protection authority.

The Schleswig-Holstein State Office for the Preservation of Monuments is responsible for the protection and maintenance of cultural monuments and monument areas, with the exception of archaeological monuments and archaeological monument areas (archaeology). The Archaeological State Office of Schleswig-Holstein is responsible for these.
