Identity card for children and young people under the age of 16

Children and adolescents under the age of 16 can obtain an identity card at the request of guardians.

Before a child reaches the age of 16, persons with custody can apply for an identity card as an alternative to the child's passport or passport for the child.

  • Up-to-date photograph that complies with the provisions of the Identity Card Ordinance (biometric photograph),
  • Birth certificate
  • if available, the old identity card, children's passport or passport,
  • Identity card or passport of both parents.

The issuance of a passport for children requires the application of both parents if they are jointly entitled to parental care and the parents live together.
The application can be made by only one parent if the existence of the consent of the other parent is confirmed in writing.
If parents who have joint parental authority are not only temporarily separated, only the parent with whom the child habitually resides may apply for the passport.

From the age of 10, the child must provide a signature.

General information on applying for an identity card can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
