Issuing a marriage certificate when marrying abroad
The registry office issues documents and certified extracts from the marriage registers. If the marriage has been concluded abroad, the issue of documents and certified register printouts can only take place if the marriage has been subsequently certified by a German registry office. The same applies to the marriage of two foreign nationals in the country before a person duly authorised by the Government of the State to which one of the spouses belongs, in the form prescribed by the law of that State. On request, civil status certificates shall be granted to persons to which a register entry relates, as well as their spouses, civil partners, ancestors and descendants. Other persons have the right to issue civil status certificates if they can establish a legal interest.
Proof of identity (identity card, passport, or appropriate identity document) for the examination of the eligibility of the application and, if necessary, Proof of legal interest
No application forms are required.
The applicant must be the person to which the register entry relates. Spouses, civil partners, ancestors, descendants or other persons who can establish a legal interest are also entitled to apply.
The applicant person applies for the issue of a civil status certificate or a certified register expression. Spouses, civil partners, ancestors, descendants or other persons who can establish a legal interest are also entitled to apply. After checking the authorization, the registry office issues the certificate or the certified expression from the register.
