Vehicles that were first registered for traffic at least 30 years ago are considered "historic". The day of the first approval is decisive.

  • current identity card or passport with registration confirmation - not older than 3 months
  • electronic insurance confirmation (eVB) in accordance with Section 23 vehicle registration ordinance (FZV)

  • SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of vehicle tax
    • This must be submitted in writing in the original signed by the holder in the case of approval, including by third parties. In the event of a different account holder/account holder, this mandate must be signed in the original by the holder and by the account holder. The specified bank details must be proven.
    • Alternatively:
      • Certificate under which the Main Customs Office waives the collection of motor vehicle tax, or
      • Proof of exemption
  • if necessary, reservation confirmation for the desired number plate

in addition, in the case of completion by third parties:

  • Identity card or passport with current confirmation of registration of the authorised person

for companies additionally:

  • Extract from the Commercial Register or Commercial Register
  • the identity documents of the responsible person entitled to sign (Managing Director, Authorized Representative) and their power of attorney
in the case of already registered vehicle, additionally:
  • Approval certificate Part I

  • Certificate of Registration Part II

  • official registration plates

  • Expert opinion according to Section 23 Road Traffic Registration Regulations (StVZO) (expert opinion for the classification of a vehicle as a classic car) and main investigation (HU)

in the event of decommissioning of the vehicle before 1 October 2005:

  • Certificate of decommissioning

  • Vehicle letter

  • Expert opinion according to Section 23 Road Traffic Registration Regulations (StVZO) (expert opinion for the classification of a vehicle as a classic car) and main investigation (HU)

Vehicles are considered to be historic if they are

  • primarily for the care of the automotive-technical cultural property,
  • not be used for commercial purposes,
  • approved for the first time at least 30 years ago,
  • have been assessed by an officially recognised expert, a technical testing body or a test engineer from a monitoring organisation, and
  • in a good original state of preservation.

The application must be made in person or by a person authorised in writing. Your insurance company and the Main Customs Office will be informed by the competent authority of the allocation of the number plate.
