Accident, illness, death of the partner, unemployment or low income can cause anyone to be in distress. He can then receive social assistance under certain conditions. Social assistance is not a handout, but a legally guaranteed right. However, this only applies if the person concerned cannot help himself and no one else helps him. It doesn't matter what makes him in distress. Social assistance is available in various forms: in the form of money, both as a current monthly payment and as a one-off benefit, as a benefit in kind, as personal help, e.g. in the procurement of an apartment or a home place, through advice and support for those seeking help. Social assistance is provided by local and inter-local social assistance institutions.
