The transport of pupils is the transport of pupils on the way to school. A right to transport pupils or reimbursement of costs applies only to certain groups of pupils, in principle the legal guardians have to bear the costs.

A transport obligation or a right to reimbursement is limited to the number of persons listed in the law, i.e. children who attend a school kindergarten or who take part in special language support measures, as well as the pupils of the Years 1 to 10 of the general schools and the 11th and 12th years of schooling for pupils with intellectual disabilities, year of vocational education, vocational preparation year, class 1 of vocational schools without a secondary school leaving certificate.

The counties and towns without districts shall, as carriers of the transport of pupils, transport the persons residing in their territory to school under reasonable conditions or to provide them or their legal guardians with the necessary expenses for the way to school. refunded.

In principle, the obligation to transport or reimburse is only for the way to the nearest school of the chosen school.

The carriers of the transport of pupils shall determine on their own responsibility the manner in which they comply with this obligation to transport or reimbursement. In doing so, they can specify both the mode of transport (school buses, public transport) and the minimum distance between home and school from which the obligation to transport or reimbursement is required. This is used in different ways; as a rule, the distances between about 2 and 5 km are fixed, depending on age and local conditions.
