If you wish to carry out a test drive for the test of usability or a transfer with an unregistered vehicle within the Federal Republic of Germany, you need a short-term number plate (until 1998: " red number plate ") for one-time use.

The application must be submitted to the competent authority in person or by a written authorised person (e.g. car dealer). If an application form is necessary, you can get it in advance from the competent authority and fill it out at home. Depending on the offer of the competent authority, a download form or an online service is available via the Internet. You will receive a special vehicle certificate from the competent authority, which you must fill in.

Short-term indicators do not apply abroad. In principle, they may only be used within the federal territory.

The registration plates and the vehicle registration certificate do not need to be returned to the competent authority after the expiry of the period. They shall cease to be valid after the expiry of the period.

The short-term indicator contains the abbreviation of the registration district and a number starting with 03 or 04. The official stamp plate is blue.

You can have the license plates produced during application processing. To do this, contact the private providers, who are usually located near the relevant authorities. The cost of the signs is not included in the fees. The number plates are stamped by the competent authority.

The data shall be collected and entered in full by the competent authority in the vehicle registration certificate for short-term registration plates.

If the vehicle does not have a valid main examination, a short-term number plate can be applied for, stating in the vehicle registration certificate that journeys are only made to the nearest inspection body in the registration area and back. Only if the main examination has been passed, it is only possible to continue the journey.

If the vehicle does not correspond to an approved type or if no individual approval has been granted, a short-term registration plate may be applied for, stating in the vehicle's certificate that journeys are only to the nearest inspection body in the registration district or a adjacent district and back.
