In any case, you must personally apply for the rewriting of the driving licence, as your signature is required for the production of the driving licence at the Federal Printing Office.

Preconditions

  • Holder of a driving licence
  • the tests required for the new driving licence class(s) have been taken
  • ordinary residence in Germany
  • required minimum age:
    • 25 years for direct access to Class A
    • 21 years for classes D, D1, DE or D1E
    • 18 years for Class A for access in tiers and for classes B, BE, C, C1, CE or C1E
    • 16 years for classes A1, L, M and T
  • suitable for driving motor vehicles
  • trained to drive motor vehicles in accordance with the Driving Instructors Act and the legislation based on it
  • Proven ability to drive motor vehicles in a theoretical and practical test
  • Ability to provide first aid
  • not in possession of a driving licence of that class issued in a Member State of the European Union or another Contracting State to the Agreement on the European Economic Area

You must apply for a driving licence for the first time.
The driving licence authority will determine whether there are any concerns about your suitability. This takes a certain amount of time, which is why the application should be submitted no later than the start of driving school training.
A driving licence can only be issued after the applicant has been checked. The application shall be forfeited if the theoretical examination has not been passed within 12 months of receipt of the test order or the practical examination within 12 months of the existence of the theoretical examination.
The driving licence is usually handed over with the passing of the driving test.
The licence application is valid for two years. It shall be forfeited if the theoretical examination is not passed within 12 months of receipt of the test order or the practical examination within 12 months of the passing of the theoretical examination.
