Motor vehicle deregistration for decommissioning Unfortunately this specification of service has not yet been completely translated.

Since 1 March 2007, no distinction has been made between temporary and final decommissioning. A vehicle has either the status of "approved" or "decommissioned". Only one main examination (HU) is required. This provides a relief for the holder, as the costs of a new acceptance are also saved.

Return journeys after removal of the stamp badges may be carried out with the unstamped number plates in the registration district indicated by the number plate and in the adjacent district on the day of decommissioning until 24 o'clock of the same day at the most. The registration plates must be affixed to the vehicle. During the journey, the shortest route must be taken without a detour.

  • Approval certificate Part I

  • previous license plates

  • informal declaration of whereabouts or proof of recovery in the case of disposal of cars and small trucks up to 3.5th total weight abroad or their utilization in Germany

Vehicles that will be decommissioned from 01.03.2007 will no longer automatically retain the previous number plate. This will be re-released after a short period of time by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). If you want to use the same number plate again in a later re-registration, it is important to have your number plate pre-booked with the appropriate authority.

As of January 1, 2015, decommissioning can take place in the online procedure if the prerequisites are met.
