Vehicle deregistration, stolen vehicle

Stolen vehicles can be deregistered from the registration authorities. Otherwise, vehicle taxes and insurance contributions are still due.
Documents for decommissioning if the holder requests deregistration:
  • Registration certificate Part I / vehicle registration)
  • Written copy of the police report of theft (only the file number is not sufficient)
  • valid identity card or passport with a current confirmation of registration

Additional documents if someone else requests deregistration

  • Registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document) or
  • If the registration certificate Part II is not available: Proof of the right of disposal, e.g. through a sales contract
  • Power of attorney from the registered owner if an agent submits the application (ID of the agent and a legible color copy of the ID of the vehicle owner required)

If the vehicle registration document or the vehicle registration document has also been stolen, this must be listed in the theft notification. Otherwise, the loss must be proven by issuing an affidavit in lieu of an oath.

The vehicle can be deregistered at any vehicle registration office in Germany.
