Election workers ensure that the election process is carried out properly, hand out the ballot papers in the polling stations and determine the result by counting them. In principle, any person entitled to vote can be admitted as a polling officer, depending on the type of election: For federal elections: Germans aged 18 and over .
For citizenship elections: Germans aged 16 and over who live in
Hamburg are registered. For elections to the European Parliament: Germans and EU citizens aged 18 and over who are registered in Hamburg.
For elections to the district assemblies: Germans and EU citizens aged 16 and over who are registered in Hamburg. For referendums and citizenship referendums (as voting assistants): Germans aged 16 and over who are registered in Hamburg.
An appropriate allowance is paid for work as an election worker in Hamburg.
