Driving ban on lorries on Sundays and public holidays - exemption

In Germany, lorries with a maximum permissible weight of more than 7.5 t and trailers are not allowed to operate behind lorries on Sundays and public holidays between 0:00 and 22:00.

The ban does not apply to:

  • combined rail-to-rail freight transport from the consignor to the nearest suitable loading station or from the nearest suitable unloading station to the consignee, but only up to a distance of 200 km,
  • combined freight transport port-road between the loading or unloading point and a port within a radius of not more than 150 kilometres (collection or removal),
  • (b) fresh meat and fresh meat products, (c) fresh fish, live fish and fresh fish products, (d) perishable fruit and vegetables;
  • Empty journeys related to journeys referred to in point 2 shall be
  • Journeys on vehicles used under the Federal Performance Act.

In doing so, the performance notice must be carried along and handed over to persons responsible for examination upon request.

Exceptions to the Sunday and public holiday driving ban may be granted under certain conditions.

  • Formless application with justification,
  • freight and accompanying documents,
  • in the case of transport over a road of more than 100 km, a certificate from the goods handling of the place of dispatch of the impossibility of timely rail transport,
  • for international traffic, proof of the clearance times of the border customs office for cargoes on lorries,
  • Motor vehicle and trailer certificate.
  • A corresponding official certificate is required for foreign motor vehicles whose registration documents do not include the permissible total weight and engine power.


An exemption may only be granted if certain conditions are met, e.g.:

  • Supplying the population with easily spoilable food
  • Timely loading and unloading of seagoing vessels
  • Maintaining the operation of public utilities or transport facilities.

An exemption is granted after written application. Applications can also be made by fax.
