Name: Subsequent determination of a common civil partnership name after the establishment of the civil partnership in Germany Unfortunately this specification of service has not yet been completely translated.

If no joint civil partnership name was determined when the partnership was established and the partnership still exists, the joint declaration on the determination of a civil partnership name can be made subsequently.

Possibilities

  • Determination of a civil partnership name (= common family name)
One of the birth names of the civil partners or a family name used until the establishment of the civil partnership can be determined as the civil partnership name. As long as the civil partnership exists a revocation of the jointly determined civil partnership name is not possible.
  • Determination of a double name
If a joint civil partnership name has been determined, the person whose name has not become the name of a civil partnership may put his or her maiden name or the family name used up to the determination of the civil partnership name in front of the civil partnership name or append it. The double name is connected by a hyphen.
The addition of a name is not possible if the jointly determined civil partnership name already consists of several names.
If the name to be prefixed or added to the civil partnership name consists of several names, only one of these names can be added.

  • Revocation of the double name
The declaration of the prefix or appendix can be revoked at any time by a publicly notarised declaration. A new addition is then no longer possible.
  • Re-acceptance of a previously used name
After dissolution of the registered civil partnership, the birth name or the family name used until the civil partnership name is determined can be re-accepted. This declaration is irrevocable.

  • Current certified copy of the civil partnership register
  • Valid identity card or passport

Hints

Responsible for the "receipt" and thus for the effectiveness of the declaration is the registry office, which keeps the register of civil partnerships. However, the declaration can be made at any domestic registry office.

Example: The civil partnership was established at the registry office in Cologne, but both partners live in Bremen.

The registry office in Bremen can take down the declaration and then send it to the registry office in Cologne. The declaration becomes effective at the moment it is received by the registry office

The certified copy of the marriage register to be submitted should not be older than six months.

The relevant declarations must be made in person at the registry office.

With life partnership name determination:
Joint declaration of the two life partners

If a name is added to the civil partnership name or if the original name is reinstated:
Declaration by the relevant person.

All declarations are publicly notarized by the registry office.
