The paternity of a minor child may be recognised in a public document. The necessary consents (e.g. of the mother of the child) can also be notarised.

The documents can be recorded before or after the birth of the child.

If the father does not acknowledge paternity, the child's mother can receive advice and assistance in establishing paternity. She may also set up an assistance service of the Youth Welfare Office for this purpose.

Both parents must appear personally, preferably together.

After the legal consequences of the document have been explained, it is read out and signed by the father. If the mother of the child has appeared, she can also sign.

Authenticated copies of the document are handed over.

The consent of the child's mother is necessary for the recognition to be effective. If the mother's consent is also available, a birth certificate can be obtained from the child's registry office, in which the father is recorded.
