European lawyer Admission

Admission to the bar for professionals from the member states of the European Union, the EEA and Switzerland

Foreign legal professionals who have been admitted to a regional bar association in accordance with §§ 2 and 3 of the EurAG may, provided that they have regularly dealt with cases assessed under German law over a period of three years, be admitted to the (German) bar in order to acquire the German bar title and to appear in foreign law transactions.

  • Complete CV with photo
  • Proof of nationality according to § 3 Abs. 1 EuRAG
  • Certificate from the competent authority in the country of origin of affiliation to the profession of European lawyer, which is not older than 3 months and which is enclosed by a certified translation (§ 3 para. 2 EuRAG)
  • Proof of professional indemnity insurance in the original
  • if applicable, certified copy(s) of the doctoral certificate or further evidence of the acquisition of academic degrees
  • Proof of payment of the administration fee

The admission of a European lawyer who has already been admitted does not change his or her legal powers this admission serves solely to award the title of German lawyer.

Already admitted European lawyers in accordance with §§ 2 and 3 EuRAG, who have worked in Germany for a period of three years, but not primarily in German law, can be admitted to the (German) bar in accordance with § 13 ff. EuRAG if the necessary knowledge and experience in German law have otherwise been acquired and proven.

After receipt of application:

  • Registration of the transaction and assignment of a file number
  • Check of the submitted documents for completeness and, if necessary, additional request for further necessary documents
  • Control of receipt of payment of the admission fee
  • Submission of the complete documents to the Executive Board for review and decision

After a decision on admission:

  • Preparation of the admission file by means of swearing-in
  • Letter of invitation to applicants
  • Preparation of the admission certificate to the bar and the admission certificate in the chamber district as well as the swearing-in protocol with the corresponding oath formula
  • Sworn in by the President of the Bar Association/Executive Board
  • Transfer of data to the lawyer's directory, assignment of a membership number and creation of a personnel file
  • Registration of the lawyer in the Federal Register of Lawyers
