If you are German in the sense of the Basic Law and have reached the age of 18, you are liable to military service. If you want to leave the Federal Republic of Germany for a period of more than 3 months after you have reached the age of 17, you will need a permit from the district military replacement office responsible for you. The same applies if you wish to remain outside the Federal Republic of Germany for longer than an approved period or if you wish to extend a stay outside the Federal Republic of Germany for more than three months that is not subject to approval.

The above information should be supported by evidence. This can be, for example, an employment contract or a certificate of study.

Procedure

In order to obtain permission to stay abroad for more than 3 months, you must send an informal application to the district military replacement office responsible for you or explain your request there in writing. The application should contain the following details, together with appropriate supporting documents:

Address of place of residence
Period of stay abroad or date of departure
Reason for the stay abroad

Deadlines

The application must be submitted in good time before leaving Germany, as otherwise the enlistment period may be extended until the age of 25 if enlistment on a date before the age of 23 was no longer possible due to an unauthorised stay abroad The applications are processed very promptly; you can expect a reply within a few days.
