Drinking water is a food product and is subject to particularly strict safety requirements. Water supply systems are monitored by the public health department.
If you wish to operate a centralized or decentralized water supply system, a private water supply system (private well), or a building water supply system that provides public drinking water, you must notify your local public health department of:
- the installation
- commissioning and recommissioning
- structural or operational changes
- the transfer of ownership or right of use
- full or partial decommissioning
Similar requirements apply if you operate a mobile or temporary water supply system.
As the operator of a building water supply system, you must also register any non-potable water system operated within the same building. This does not apply to fire-fighting water and drinking water systems if you supply potable water to them.
