If you move into a new home, you must register with the registration office responsible for you at your new place of residence within two weeks of moving in.
The following applies as your main residence:
- If you are married or living in a civil partnership: the home you both primarily use. This also applies if you are only living apart temporarily.
- If you are married or in a civil partnership and live apart permanently: Your predominantly used home.
- If you are a minor: the home mainly used by your parents or foster parents. If they live separately, the main residence is the home you mainly live in.
- If you cannot clearly determine the home you mainly use: Your home in which you have the center of your life.
- If you have several homes in Germany, your main home is the home you mainly use.
To register your new main residence, you must visit the registration office responsible for you in person or have someone authorized by you do so. You can also register your new home online under certain conditions.
