Preconditions
Notify the relevant housing benefit authority immediately if, during the current grant period and not just temporarily, i.e. for longer than four months
- your rent/burden - excluding heating costs - is reduced by more than 15 percent,
- the income of household members increases by more than 15 percent,
- the number of household members is reduced,
- one or more household members apply for or receive transfer benefits (citizen's allowance, social benefit, basic income support),
- a single household member has died (notification by the heirs or guardians).
Hints
In order to avoid or uncover unlawful claims for housing benefit, the housing benefit authority may regularly check the household members by means of a so-called data comparison (for example with the registration authorities or the German Pension Insurance).

Legal Remedies
After you have notified the changes, you will receive a notification from your housing benefit authority if the amount of housing benefit has changed. If you feel that your rights have been infringed by this decision, you can lodge an appeal against it.
If you intend to lodge an appeal against the decision of the housing benefit authority, you must do so within one month of receiving the decision.
The same applies if you wish to appeal against the decision.

Procedure
The competent housing benefit authority will decide ex officio on the payment of housing benefit if there are more than temporary changes in your circumstances during the current grant period.
Please inform the competent housing benefit authority immediately if there are any changes that are not only temporary during the current approval period.
Once you have reported the changes, you will receive a notification from your housing benefit authority if the amount of housing benefit has changed.
