If your insurance coverage ends, you can apply to remain a member of the statutory long-term care insurance program (also known as social long-term care insurance).
You can apply for continued coverage with the long-term care insurance fund where you were last insured. The long-term care insurance fund is affiliated with your statutory health insurance provider, so you can use the same contact information.
Please note: The application for continued coverage is only available to individuals who are not otherwise covered by long-term care insurance. Anyone who is insured under the statutory health insurance system—whether voluntarily or as a mandatory member—is already automatically enrolled in the statutory long-term care insurance program. This includes family members covered under a family policy. At the same time, those with private health insurance are required to have private long-term care insurance. Therefore, you can only apply for continued coverage under the statutory long-term care insurance if your mandatory insurance obligation ends and, at the same time, you are no longer covered by health insurance in Germany—and thus also no longer covered by long-term care insurance—due to a move abroad or for other reasons.
If you move abroad with your family, continued coverage under long-term care insurance also applies to your children and your spouse if they were previously covered under your family insurance.
