As a teacher, you educate and teach with your own pedagogical freedom and responsibility. You give lessons in the subjects, school levels and types of school for which you acquire the teaching qualification. In order to be prepared for this task in the best possible way, you must meet certain requirements.

First, you will complete a teacher training course. You can do this in Halle (Saale) or Magdeburg. You have the choice between studying to become a teacher at

Primary schools
Special schools
Secondary schools
Secondary schools
Vocational schools.

At the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, teacher training concludes with the 1st state examination. A few years ago, the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg converted its teacher training to a Bachelor-Master system. The Master of Education corresponds to the 1st state examination.

After successfully completing your studies, you will acquire practical skills and abilities as a teacher in the subsequent preparatory service. The preparatory service generally lasts 16 months. The training takes place at state seminars for teaching professions in Halle and Magdeburg and at approved training schools. The preparatory service concludes with the career examination for a teaching profession.

If you want to apply for the preparatory service for the teaching profession at vocational schools, you will also need:

Certificates and evidence of a total of one year of practical work related to the professional field. Proof can be provided in the form of job references, internship certificates (duration/scope of time must be apparent) or, alternatively, through completed vocational training with practical activity (not pure school training).

Preconditions

The preparatory service may be employed by any person who:

has passed the First State Examination or a "Master of Education" degree for the respective teaching profession in Saxony-Anhalt or an examination recognised as equivalent with an approved combination of subjects, and
has the required German language skills (certificate with level C 2 may be required).

For the teaching profession at vocational schools:

one-year practical experience related to the vocational specialty.

Procedure

First, register on the Matorixmatch online portal.
Please note that you have not yet submitted an application with the registration!
After successful registration, please enter your personal data and upload the required application documents.
To do this, select your degree in the applicant pool under the item Training.
Then select the "Preparatory Service" advertisement in the "Application" section and send the application within the application deadline. After successful receipt of your application, you will receive a confirmation of receipt by e-mail.
If more applications are received than there are apprenticeships available, a selection process will be carried out.
After completion of the respective selection process, you will receive a notification.
If you are admitted to the preparatory service, you will receive a written notification by e-mail with an offer of employment, which is associated with the request to comment within a set period of time whether you want to accept the offer.
Experience has shown that not all offers of employment are accepted, so that places are often still allocated in the succession procedure until the last day of recruitment.
If you accept the offer of employment, your work and training will take place in the respective school as well as in the state seminars. At the State Seminar for Teacher Training Halle (Saale), teachers are trained at primary, special and secondary schools as well as grammar schools. At the State Seminar for Teaching Professions in Magdeburg, the training of teachers takes place at primary, special and secondary schools, grammar schools and vocational schools.

However, an application will also be considered if proof of the First State Examination for a teaching profession or an examination recognized as equivalent with a permissible combination of subjects is submitted up to the following dates:

Please apply by the deadlines even if it is foreseeable that you will not receive your certificate by the specified deadline.
