If, due to a disability or an impending disability, it is not yet clear which occupational activities are suitable for you, you can have your vocational suitability assessed or participate in a work trial.

Depending on your situation, you will receive the appropriate support:

Work trial measures
Measures for the “Assessment of Labor Market Readiness for Severely Affected People with Disabilities” (DIA-AM), consisting of:
- Aptitude analysis (Phase 1)
- Workplace trial (Phase 2)

These measures can help you identify your skills, knowledge, interests, and career opportunities. This will allow you to determine which activities are suitable for you and what support you need to participate in the workforce.

During a work trial, you can learn about and gain hands-on experience with various job tasks and working conditions. The results will help you select appropriate support services for your future career path.

While participating in one of these programs, you will receive social-educational and psychological support.

At the end, a final report documents your personal capabilities. It also states whether—and, if so, which—employment opportunities on the general labor market are suitable for you.

If you are eligible for unemployment benefits or basic income support while participating, you will generally continue to receive these benefits. Under certain conditions, you may receive transitional benefits instead.

Preconditions

You have a disability or are at risk of developing one.
Your disability affects your career opportunities.
Your designated rehabilitation agency is the Federal Employment Agency.
It has not yet been determined which types of work are suitable for you or what support you need to participate in the workforce.

The Employment Agency, as your designated rehabilitation provider, will cover the costs incurred during your participation. During the diagnostic assessment, you are generally covered by health, long-term care, accident, and pension insurance.

Legal Remedies

Appeal to the employment agency that issued the decision. Further information on how to lodge an appeal can be found in the respective decision.

Procedure

Schedule an appointment with the Vocational Rehabilitation and Inclusion Team at your local Employment Agency.
If you do not yet have a personal contact person, schedule an appointment through the Federal Employment Agency’s service hotline.
During a personal consultation, you will decide together whether your vocational suitability should be assessed or whether a work trial is necessary.
If your advisor determines that this support is appropriate for you, you will be registered with a provider that implements the program on behalf of the Employment Agency.
Your advisor will also go over the forms you need to fill out with you. You can also complete the forms online.

As soon as your start date for the program is set, your advisor will inform you of it.

Processing time

Processing usually takes several weeks. Once the benefit has been approved, the measure should begin as soon as possible in coordination with the provider.
