The chip also contains electronic proof of identity and the option of using an electronic signature.
The following residence permits are issued in the format of the electronic residence permit (eAT):
- Residence permit
- Settlement permit
- Permit for permanent residence-EG
- Residence card for third-country national family members of a Union citizen or a national of an EEA state
- Permanent residence card for third-country national family members of a Union citizen or a national of an EEA state

General information
Residence permits are issued in the form of an electronic residence permit (eAT) in credit card format with a memory chip. Your personal and biometric data as well as the ancillary provisions are stored on the chip.
The residence permit is ordered by the Immigration Office from the Federal Printing Office in Berlin, which is responsible for the production of electronic residence permits. The same applies to the issuing of travel documents for foreigners, refugees and stateless persons.
Once the electronic residence permit or travel document has been produced and delivered, you can collect it from the Foreigners' Registration Office after making an appointment. The production of electronic residence permits takes about four weeks. The production of travel documents currently takes four to six weeks. An appointment can therefore be arranged at the earliest four weeks after the residence permit has been issued or six weeks after applying for the travel document.
