Carlo Schmid Programme for traineeships in international organisations, EU institutions and non-governmental organisations (CSP)

The Carlo Schmid Programme familiarises outstanding students and postgraduate students with the challenges and working methods in the international administrative sector in the form of a traineeship and helps them to develop their intercultural skills. Accompanying activities are also provided with the aim of further improving the conditions and opportunities for these young people to pursue a career in the international field at a later date.

The programme is for German students and postgraduate students in all academic disciplines. The applicants should already have had some experience of international issues during their studies.

Two programme lines are offered:

Programme line A

Full-time traineeships applied for on the applicants own initiative at EU institutions, in the UN system, in the Bretton Woods organisations, at NATO, OSCE and in approved non-governmental organisations .

Programme line B

Candidates can apply for one or two of the traineeship opportunities advertised. The application must focus precisely on the specific requirements and tasks of the traineeship. The Carlo Schmid Programme is run by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in cooperation with the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and the Stiftung Mercator (Mercator Foundation) and it is predominantly financed using funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as well as the Stiftung Mercator .

Lehramt.International

The Lehramt.International programme aims to help trainee teachers gain the intercultural skills required to teach successfully in heterogeneous classrooms. The DAAD uses funds from the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) in the comprehensive Lehramt.International programme to support student teachers on their stays abroad and also supports educational establishments in internationalising their teacher training courses.

Funds are available to students from German higher education establishments pursuing teaching degrees in Germany (funding line 1) and postgraduate students who have passed the first state exam/have a masters degree and would like to gain some practical experience abroad before their traineeship (funding line 2).

Scholarships are awarded for short-term traineeships of 30 days to six months for trainee teachers and traineeships lasting from three to 12 months for graduate teachers at educational facilities abroad.

Applicants must provide proof that they have arranged their own traineeship position, which will be certified by the German educational establishment.
