  • What to do if you have received a new national passport and need to have your residence permit transferred

  • If you are living in Bremen with the status of toleration and it is impossible for you to leave Germany for a longer period of time for reasons that are not your fault, you can apply for a residence permit at the Migration Office.
This also applies if you have been living tolerated in Bremen for several years and you have integrated well / sustainably.
You can find out more about the requirements here:

  • In principle, the embassy / consulate is responsible for issuing passports. The reissue can take a few weeks.

Foreigners are obliged to report the loss / theft of their passport to the immigration authorities immediately. There you will receive a certificate of lost identity papers (with a passport photo if you wish). This is usually required by the embassy / consulate.

The theft of the passport must also be reported to the police.

After receiving the new passport, you must visit the immigration office again to apply for the new residence permit.

If the passport is found again, the responsible immigration office must be informed immediately.

  • The first-time issue of a residence permit to tolerant tolerance holders and asylum seekers takes place at the Central Immigration Office at the Office for Migration. Foreigners who already have a valid visa or residence permit, as well as EU citizens, please contact the responsible district office.
