  • The birth of a child must be reported to the competent authority in whose jurisdiction the child was born.

    The obligation to report a home birth is in the following order:

    • each of the child's parents, if they have custody,
    • any other person who was present at the birth or who has knowledge of the birth.
  • You are a foster carer and the natural parents want to take the child back in? Then you can apply to the family court for the child to stay with you.

  • For a minor child of separated parents, reasonable maintenance may be demanded from the party liable to pay maintenance.

  • For an adoption, the consent of both parents and the child is required. In exceptional cases, the family court can replace the consent of one parent to the adoption. The competent youth welfare office is obliged to advise and instruct the parents on the procedure.

  • If you need proof of birth from the former German territories or from the consular and colonial registers, you can apply for a birth certificate. You can obtain this from the registry office I in Berlin.

  • If the adoption of a child originating from abroad is possible, the adoption applicants are requested by the international placement office to declare that they are prepared to adopt this child if it enters Germany. This declaration must be notarized.

  • If the other parent lives abroad and does not pay child support, you can get assistance from the Beistandschaft and the Amtsgericht.

    • If you are pregnant or have just given birth, you can make use of the services of a midwife
  • If the other parent does not pay child support, you can get assistance from the Beistandschaft and have the obligation to pay child support notarized. The maintenance advance money office can help you directly financially and make an advance payment or substitute the maintenance.

  • If the other parent lives abroad and does not pay maintenance, you can obtain support from the assistance office and the local court and have the maintenance obligation checked and possibly certified.
