A visa can be extended if the existence of force majeure, humanitarian reasons or serious personal reasons are proven and these prevent timely departure. In these cases, the extended visa remains valid for the entire Schengen area.
If there are other important personal reasons that do not necessarily prevent you from leaving the country on time, the visa may be extended as a so-called national visa. This visa is then only valid for Germany.
