When traveling outside the European Union (EU), children generally need a passport that is valid for several years.
The passport
- is recognized both within the EU and outside the EU,
- has a chip on which certain identity features are stored,
- can be applied for at any age from birth.
Only persons with custody can apply for a passport for children.
- It is sufficient for one person with custody to submit the application. In this case, the person with custody who is not accompanying the child must bring a signed declaration of consent and an original or copy of an identity document.
- You can find the declaration of consent under "Forms".
You must apply for your child's passport in person and together with your child.
Responsibilities
- You can apply for a passport at the Bürgeramt Bremen in one of the BürgerServiceCenters.
- If you have more than one place of residence, the Bürgeramt at your main place of residence is responsible.
- If there is an important reason, you can also apply for a passport at an authority outside your child's place of residence. This may incur additional costs for you.
- If you live abroad or if your child's passport has been lost abroad, you can apply for a passport for your child at the German representation abroad.
Children's passports have no longer been issued since 01.01.2024.
If your child still has a valid children's passport, you can continue to use it until
- the validity expires,
- the information no longer applies, with the exception of the height information
- the photo is no longer sufficient to clearly identify your child.
Note: Not all countries recognize the children's passport. Please check which countries recognize the children's passport before you travel. Use the travel and security information provided by the Federal Foreign Office under "Further information".
Further general information on passports can be found under "Further information" - "Applying for a passport".
