Bundesportal | Vehicle License Plates; Applying for an E-Plate

Upon request, an "E" license plate is issued for the following vehicles:

Battery electric vehicle (BEV)
Fuel cell vehicle (FCEV)
Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV)

In addition, the following requirements must be met:

_{CO2 emissions}(WLTP) below 50 g/km or
Electric range of 40 km (city range, EAER City)

The vehicles must be classified as Class M1, N1, L3e, L4e, L5e, or L7e. Class N2 vehicles may receive an “E” license plate if they can be driven in Germany with a Class B driver’s license and have a maximum gross vehicle weight of 4,250 kg.

The “E” license plate features the letter “E” following the vehicle identification number. It can also be issued as a transferable license plate or a seasonal license plate.

You will be charged the costs associated with the respective registration process (see "Related Topics"). You can apply for the E-license plate when registering a new vehicle or whenever the vehicle is re-registered.

If you want to have your vehicle issued an E-license plate, the cost is approximately 30.00 EUR.

Online registration with an E-license plate costs 13.10 EUR.

In addition, there are fees charged by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (0.60–3.80 EUR) and for document seals used (0.30 EUR each).
Furthermore, the registration authority may charge for postage costs incurred

Additional fees apply for reserving and selecting a personalized license plate.

You must obtain the license plates yourself from private providers at your own expense.
