You can deregister your vehicle with a Hamburg license plate or a foreign license plate with the State Office for Transport, for example if you want to sell it or temporarily stop using it.
After deregistration, the vehicle may no longer be driven or parked on public roads.
After deregistration, you no longer have to pay insurance or taxes for the vehicle. The LBV will therefore inform your vehicle insurance company and the customs authorities about the deregistration.

Preconditions
You want to deregister your vehicle.
Hints
License plate reservation
If you only need to deregister your vehicle temporarily, you can reserve the old license plate for up to one year for future registration. This can only be done at the Hamburg State Transport Authority (LBV) for Hamburg license plates (with HH) and is subject to a fee. Reservation is possible immediately after deregistration.
Export abroad
If you wish to transfer your vehicle abroad, it is recommended that you deregister it in Germany beforehand. Further information can be found under "Links".
Journey after deregistration
After deregistration, the vehicle and its previously assigned license plates may be used for one journey until the end of the day of deregistration, provided the journey is covered by the vehicle insurance. This means that for vehicles registered in Hamburg, a direct journey to their storage location in Hamburg or in an adjacent registration district is still possible.
Decommissioning (deregistration) of a stolen vehicle
This is only possible if the vehicle is registered in Hamburg. The license plate will be blocked for 10 years, meaning it cannot be reissued. You will need a police report of theft for this.
Incomplete sales advertisement
If the information provided about the buyer is incomplete or incorrect, the previous owner must submit a sworn affidavit regarding the sale to the LBV (State Office for Roads and Transportation). The owner must appear in person and present a valid identity card for this purpose.
In the case of legal entities, the affidavit is submitted by the authorized representative. Proof of authorization to represent the entity must be provided.
The previous owner bears the costs at the end of the proceedings.
The deregistration process can only be started 3 months after the vehicle has been sold.
The fee for deregistration is EUR 16.50.
A fee of €2.60 must be paid for reserving a license plate for 28 days.
A fee of €10.20 is also payable for the new registration with the reserved personalized license plate.
If a statutory declaration has to be taken, the amount increases by EUR 31.00.
For vehicle sales without a purchase agreement: Depending on the individual case, €30.00 to €40.00.
The exact cost can only be determined on site after the complete documentation has been submitted.
