If you are studying human medicine, you will be required to complete a three-month nursing internship at a hospital or rehabilitation facility with a comparable level of care. You must complete the nursing internship before starting your studies or during non-teaching periods—but definitely before registering for the first part of your medical examination.
The purpose of the mandatory nursing service is to introduce you to the operation and organization of a hospital and to familiarize you with the usual nursing activities. You can complete the nursing service in one-month segments.
If you have completed nursing service, you must provide proof of this to the relevant authority.

- in the medical service of the Bundeswehr or in comparable institutions,
- as part of a voluntary social year,
- as part of the Federal Voluntary Service,
- as part of a community service.
- successfully completed training as a midwife or obstetric nurse, as a paramedic, as an emergency paramedic, in nursing, paediatric nursing or geriatric nursing as well as successfully completed training regulated by state law of at least one year in nursing assistance or geriatric nursing assistance.
